CONSERVATION PROGRAM FOR PERSIAN TOAD HEADED LIZARD
|
Threats The major threat for Phrynocephalus persicus is the large scale habitat loss due to urban development of arid lowlands of Araks Valley. A great variety of land use practices destroying habitats for the lizard incude irrigation, mining, development of infrastructure and settlements, as well as overgrazing and military activities. Another serious threat is overcollecting. Although, there is a successful experience in captive husbandry and breeding of this lizard in the Yerevan Botanical Garden (Manvelyan & Tadevosyan, 2000; Tadevosyan, 2001a,b, Manvelyan et al., 2001),there are no permanent breeding colonies available in captivity .
